the Neddiad

«The Neddiad is the tale, the saga, the odyssey of young Neddie Wentworthstein, heir to a shoelace empire, and generally a nice kid. When his family decides to move from Chicago to Los Angeles, little does Neddie know that he is in store for a grand Hollywood adventure, whereupon he will meet the likes of swashbuckling actors, omniscient shamans, hungry ghosts, mysterious turtles, and an elephant or two.

After having been thought about for an indeterminate period, the book was written in one go, starting with the Autumnal Equinox, and finishing with the Vernal Equinox, during which time the author only had on street clothes a dozen times, and used to stomp up and down the driveway in his jammies for exercise. The actual writing was done in a more or less upright position while seated in a special-of-the-month extra-heavy-duty desk chair from Staples. A no-name IBM clone computer was used, along with an obsolete Epson laser printer, a whole box of supermarket house brand decaffienated green tea, a ream of all-purpose paper from Staples, and two 3.5 inch floppies from Radio Shack. No turtles were harmed in the making of the book.

The Neddiad will be published by Houghton Mifflin in April, 2007. Lucky web-readers will have a chance to partake in a death-defying feat of literary razzle-dazzle: the online serialization of the complete text of The Neddiad, unedited and unchanged from the day it left the hands of its creator. Chapter One is now online, and, beginning August 1st, 2006, one new chapter will be posted every Tuesday.»
